A total of 5,776 applications for various identification documents across Sarawak was approved during the Special Task Force (PPK) Steering Committee meeting held on Jan 20, out of 13,224 applications received statewide.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the approvals were finalised at the meeting jointly chaired by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

He said of the total applications received statewide, 6,733 applications or 51 per cent were rejected, while another 715 applications or five per cent are still undergoing investigation.

“For the Bukit Semuja constituency covering Serian and Siburan districts, a total of 339 applications were received and processed.

“Out of this number, 84 applications have been approved and the applicants will be issued identification documents, 242 applications were unsuccessful, while 13 applications are still under further investigation,” he said.

He was responding to Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus during the Q&A session.

Karim explained that applications which failed were mainly due to applicants being holders of birth certificates below 12 years old, MyKAS holders, MyPR or passport holders, and cases involving applicants born outside Sarawak without supporting birth documents.

“For applications that require further investigation, these include cases involving incomplete application documents and the requirement to undergo DNA testing,” he added.

He also said there are seven categories of applications involving residents without identification documents in Sarawak, namely those without any identification documents, holders of birth certificates above and below 12 years old, MyKAS holders, MyPR or passport holders, applicants born outside Sarawak without documents, and other miscellaneous categories.
