KUCHING: Sports analyst Datuk Dr Pekan Ramli believes Kuching City FC’s underdog status could serve as a strong motivational factor when they face Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) in the Malaysia Cup final.

Pekan said being labelled as outsiders in the contest may ease pressure on the Sarawak-based side, allowing them to play with greater freedom and belief on the big stage.

“For me, the underdog tag can be a psychological driver for Kuching City in the final,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted.

However, he stressed that the players must still approach the match with courage, discipline and a realistic game plan against a dominant JDT side.

“They must play bravely and stay disciplined without feeling unnecessary pressure. A realistic approach is important because JDT are expected to control the game,” he added.

Pekan noted that Kuching City’s established tactical identity, particularly their compact defensive structure and counter-attacking approach, should remain key in the final.

“They have been solid defensively, able to absorb pressure and launch quick counter-attacks. That approach should be maintained against JDT,” he explained.

Beyond tactics, Pekan highlighted that mental strength will be a decisive factor in a high-pressure final.

“In a match like the Malaysia Cup final, mentality and handling pressure are extremely important, especially against a team like JDT, who play an aggressive style,” he said.

He added that Kuching City will also need strong physical endurance and composure to cope with sustained pressure, particularly in the second half.

“Fitness is important to avoid fatigue late in the game. They must also be mentally strong, avoid provocation, and stay calm when under pressure,” he said.

Pekan added that while JDT remain favourites, narrow past encounters between the two sides show that Kuching City can still compete if they execute their plan effectively.

The Cats will play the Southern Tigers at National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, on May 23 at 9:00 pm.
