The Oceania market, particularly Australia and New Zealand, is becoming increasingly important to Sarawak’s tourism industry.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said more than 6,000 visitors from Australia and New Zealand were recorded between January to March 2026.
He said by optimising current air connectivity, targeted marketing and niche tourism products, Sarawak can strengthen its presence in this market.
“Sarawak also possesses a strong historical connection with Australia and New Zealand through war memorial events. For example, the Operation Semut involving Australian troops during World War II is remembered through commemorations and regarded as the cornerstone of the modern defense partnership between Australia and Malaysia.
“By leveraging these shared historical narratives, Sarawak can further strengthen its tourism appeal to visitors from the Oceania region, especially those with interests in history, heritage, and commemorative travel experiences,” he said.
He said this in his ministerial winding up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today (May 19).
Abdul Karim assured that Sarawak’s appeal as a premier destination for entertainment, sporting and gastronomy will continue to be strengthened.
He said his ministry remains steadfast in providing continuous support to tourism celebrations, cultural showcases, entertainment, and sporting events across Sarawak.
“We recognise the role of events and festivals in contributing to the Sarawak economy and cultural identity. By supporting these events, the benefits are extended to the whole spectrum of economy, far beyond visitor arrivals and tourism receipts,” he added.
