Sarawak’s outstanding athletes continue to make the state proud after delivering impressive achievements at national and international competitions this year.

Among those who excelled were cyclist Muhammad Danial Hakim Zulkaisi, squash player Whitney Isabelle, wushu exponent Marcos Bong Wei Zhi and national shot put record-holder Jonah Chang Rigan.
In cycling, Muhammad Danial Hakim Zulkaisi won the gold medal in the Men’s Junior Elimination Race at the Asian Track Cycling Championships 2026 in the Philippines in March before adding another gold in the Criterium 17–18 years old category at the Junior Cycling Malaysia Championship Series 1-2026 in Langkawi, Kedah in April.
Another Sarawak cyclist, Afif Danish Mohamad Nazir, also clinched gold in the Criterium 13–15 years old category at the same championship.
In sailing, Mohamad Hazmi Suwandy secured second place at the 4th YAI North East Regatta 2026 in India in April.
Sarawak’s squash athletes also continued to impress, with Altamis Aqhar Sallam A Sufian emerging champion in the Boys Under-19 category at the Touch ‘N Go Group Squash Racquets Association of Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur (SRAFTKL) International Junior Open Squash Championship 2026.
Whitney Isabelle captured first place at the same championship and later finished second at the Philippines Satellite No. 1 2026 and third at the Marigold SG Squash PSA Satellite 1 2026 in Singapore.
In wushu, Crystal Wee Yu Tang delivered a gold medal performance in the Girls’ Children Daoshu event and silver in Girls’ Children Changquan at the 10th World Junior Wushu Championships 2026 in Tianjin, China.
Bryan Wee Hao Quan won silver in Boys’ Children Daoshu and bronze medals in Boys’ Children Changquan and Gunshu, while Darren Hiing Chee Yik secured bronze in Boys’ Children Nandao.
At the 5th World Taijiquan Championships in Bulgaria, Marcos Bong Wei Zhi won three gold medals in Sun Style Taijiquan, Yang Style Taijijian and Yang Style Taijiquan.
Serene Teo Xing Ling contributed silver medals in the 3rd International Taijijian and Taijiquan events, while Elson Chong Jia Bao won silver in Chen Style Taijijian and bronze in Chen Style Taijiquan. Carmen Chaw Jia Min also secured silver in the Sun Style Taijiquan category.

Meanwhile, Jonah Chang Rigan created history by breaking the national shot put record at the 4th Asian Throwing Championship 2026 in Mokpo, South Korea in May.
The achievements were highlighted by Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during his winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today (May 19).
“We should be proud that our Sarawakian athletes continue to excel nationally and internationally, reinforcing Sarawak’s role in Malaysia’s sporting success,”he said
