KUCHING: Stadium Negeri in Petra Jaya is set for a major facelift after the conclusion of the 2027 SEA Games, as part of Sarawak’s long-term sports infrastructure development plan.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said upgrading works for the historic venue are being planned after the multi-sport event, with a focus on improving facilities and spectator comfort.

He said the current priority is to ensure Kuching City FC has a stable home venue, especially with upcoming competitions, before any major renovation works are carried out.

“Well, I would love to see the upgrading being done simultaneously together with the existing facilities. But unfortunately, we need a stadium for Kuching City FC to play.

“That is why we do not want to touch it yet. We are preparing for the SEA Games; we have to upgrade all the other facilities, including Sarawak Stadium,” he told a press conference at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today (May 19).

Abdul Karim added that once the SEA Games are completed, attention will shift towards upgrading Stadium Negeri, which holds strong sentimental value among football fans in Sarawak.

“Stadium Negeri is very sentimental to soccer fans. If you ask them to choose, they will prefer Stadium Negeri. It has not been renovated for many years. We will make sure it becomes the pride of Sarawak, the pride of Kuching,” he added.

He said the planned facelift could include improved seating areas, upgraded facilities, and enhanced spectator amenities, although current allocations may not be sufficient for full-scale redevelopment.

Abdul Karim pointed out that the budget is around RM7 million, but he believes it will not be enough once detailed planning is finalised.
