BAU: More than 80 banners advertising suspected illegal moneylending services were torn down across the district during a police operation targeting unlicensed loan syndicates yesterday (May 19).

The operation, codenamed ‘Ops Vulture’, was carried out by the district Commercial Crime Investigation Division (CCID) together with the Bau District Council at eight locations.

Bau police chief Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman said the first operation saw 48 banners removed from Taman Siniawan Villa, Siniawan town, Taman Siniawan and along Jalan Kuching-Bau.

A second sweep around Bau Market, Jalan Datuk Salau, Jalan Jambusan and Jalan Tasik Niru led to the removal of another 34 banners linked to suspected illegal moneylenders.

The banners were found hung on electricity poles, residential lane signboards and trees.

Among the phone numbers displayed on them were 016-2639154, 013-3933138, 012-8753633, 013-6833668, 010-3417317, 010-8035655, 016-9316622, 012-4300232 and 017-7038746.

It is believed that the banners were being used to promote illegal moneylending activities operating without valid licences.
