CAPE TOWN, South Africa: Police in South Africa have launched a murder investigation after two safari tourists were found dead in the famous Kruger National Park, which attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

A 71-year-old man and a woman whose identity has not yet been established were discovered on Friday with severe upper-body injuries in the northern part of the park, police in Limpopo province said on Saturday.

According to investigators, the two visitors were last seen on Wednesday at a picnic site in the far north of the park, near the borders with Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Search operations were launched after the couple failed to return.

Other tourists discovered the bodies on Friday afternoon near a riverbank.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the male victim sustained stab wounds to the upper body, while the female victim also suffered severe wounds to the upper body allegedly inflicted with a sharp object,” the police statement said.
