KUCHING: The Song Kheng Hai and Song Thian Cheok Memorial 7s once again united Sarawak’s rugby community as teams battled it out at the Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field here recently.

Wee Hong Seng said the tournament continues to honour the legacy of the late Song Kheng Hai and Song Thian Cheok, who played key roles in sports and community development in Sarawak.

“Both of them strongly believed that sports can bring people together, build discipline, and create opportunities for young people.

“Their contributions went beyond rugby. They helped shape community spirit, encouraged healthy lifestyles and supported youth development through sports,” he said during the closing and prize presentation ceremony.

Wee said the spirit and legacy left behind by both men continue to live on through the tournament and the younger generation taking to the field.

He added that Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will continue supporting sports and youth programmes to promote healthier and more active lifestyles within the community.

“Rugby teaches us discipline, teamwork, respect, leadership and resilience.

“In rugby, no one wins alone. Every player depends on one another,” he said.

Wee also praised the strong support shown by teams, organisers, sponsors, volunteers and supporters throughout the tournament.

According to him, the growing participation reflects rugby’s continued development in Sarawak, with hopes of producing more players capable of representing the state and country in future competitions.

“I also wish all our SUKMA rugby players the very best in the upcoming games. Play with pride, stay disciplined, and continue to make Sarawak proud,” he added.
