KUCHING: Sunway College Kuching and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) have formalised a strategic academic collaboration aimed at strengthening higher education partnerships, professional development and industry engagement opportunities nationwide.

The collaboration was marked by the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) between Sunway College Kuching and the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy (FPEP) of UMS.

Sunway College Kuching chief executive officer Dr Owen Voon said the partnership would create impactful opportunities for students while enhancing industry-relevant education and future-ready graduate development.

“This partnership reflects our commitment towards strengthening academic excellence, professional competencies, and producing graduates equipped with practical skills demanded by evolving industries,” he said during the signing ceremony recently.

The LOI was signed by Dr Owen and FPEP dean Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Rahimie Abd Karim, witnessed by Michelle Choo and Andy Lee.

Under the collaboration, both institutions will explore curriculum development, professional training programmes, research collaborations, publication activities, student mobility initiatives and community engagement opportunities.

Special emphasis will also focus on strengthening accounting and finance education pathways through internationally recognised qualifications including ACCA, ICAEW, CPA Australia, MICPA and CFA programmes.

Dr Mohd Rahimie said collaborations between academic institutions are increasingly important in fostering innovation and strengthening industry-academia linkages within Malaysia’s education ecosystem.

He said such partnerships would support sustainable talent development while broadening opportunities for students, researchers and educators through collaborative learning, networking and professional exposure initiatives.

The LOI also serves as a foundation towards establishing a broader Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reflecting both institutions’ shared vision of empowering students and advancing higher education development.
