KUCHING: The iconic white cat statue at Padungan was once again dressed for the festive season as the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) switched on its Gawai Dayak decorative lighting last night (May 26).

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the annual decoration of the landmark during major celebrations reflected Sarawak’s inclusivity and multicultural harmony.

“I want to thank MBKS for continuing to decorate the cat statue, this time around for Gawai. This is done during every festive season in Sarawak and it shows that we are very inclusive,” he said after officiating at the ceremony here.

Dr Sim also reminded Sarawakians travelling back to their hometowns and longhouses for the Gawai celebration to drive safely.

Meanwhile, MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the longhouse tradition of “ngabang” or visiting symbolised Sarawak’s openness and unity.

“If you have been to a longhouse, all the doors are open. That is the real open house spirit and the heartbeat of Sarawak unity, harmony and diversity,” he said.

He also called on Sarawakians to continue safeguarding the peace, stability and prosperity currently enjoyed in the state.

Wee added that this year’s Gawai-themed costume on the cat statue used printed songket-inspired material instead of original pua kumbu fabric as a sign of respect towards cultural heritage.

“We consulted relevant parties and showed them the design before proceeding because when we showcase cultural elements, we must do so respectfully,” he said.
