KUCHING: From visiting friends to competing in tournaments, Malaysia’s Toi Sieu Ee says Kuching has become a second home throughout her pickleball journey, drawn by its welcoming community and unexpectedly high playing standards.
The Kuala Lumpur-based professional said her connection with Kuching began even before she seriously took up pickleball, through friends and early visits that left a strong impression of the city’s warm culture and laid-back environment.
“I’ve been here before, mostly to see friends. I love the city – it’s very laid back, everyone is really nice and warm, and there’s less traffic than KL,” she said.
Since taking up pickleball about a year and a half ago, Toi said Kuching has become a regular stop for tournaments and training sessions, further strengthening her bond with the local community.
Her first-ever tournament experience was also in Sarawak, in Miri, which she described as a meaningful starting point in her sporting journey.
“Fast forward, I’ve come to Kuching maybe two or three times for tournaments,” she told Sarawak Tribune during the Waddle x Podium Project event powered by Friday, held at Star Pickleball on Wednesday (May 27).
She added that what surprised her most was the high standard of play in the city, with Kuching producing and nurturing players capable of competing at national level.
“Kuching pickleball is really high standard. Some of the best players in KL are actually originally from Kuching,” she said.
Toi also said she enjoys working closely with local players and organisers, including community-driven initiatives aimed at promoting the sport in a fun and inclusive way.
