KUCHING: The race for places in Sarawak’s Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 lawn bowls squad enters its final phase as eight athletes compete in the National Junior Lawn Bowls Championship in Terengganu.
The six-day tournament, running from May 29 to June 3, is being used as a key assessment platform for players currently listed in Sarawak’s long squad ahead of SUKMA Selangor 2026.
The squad, under coach Nur Fithri Yaani Hamdin, travelled to Terengganu to compete in the national junior meet.
Sarawak Lawn Bowls Association (SALBA) president Nuruljumaniza Tuah said eight athletes have been selected for the championship.
They are Danish Irsyad Ahmad Tarmimi, Aydin Zuhayr Mohamad Husairy, Muhammad Dzulfahmi Mohammad Faizul, Muhammar Naqiu Liwauddin Mohammad Najib, Damia Batrisya Mohd Shukrie, Nur Irdina Safiyya Sufian, Nurul Marisha Nazri and Nur Syamina Mohd Azlan Shah.
“This is valuable exposure for the athletes as it allows us to gauge their true capabilities.
“Most importantly, participation in this tournament gives them the opportunity to identify their individual weaknesses,” Nuruljumaniza told Sarawak Tribune recently.
She said the championship will also expose the players to a higher level of competition, with top junior bowlers from across the country expected to be in action.
Nuruljumaniza added that no medal target has been set for the team.
“It is sufficient for them to deliver their best performance in every match.
“If any of them manage to win medals, that will be considered a bonus,” she said.
Nuruljumaniza also revealed that the final list of athletes who will represent Sarawak at SUKMA Selangor 2026 will be announced this Sunday.
