SERIAN: An attempt to overtake a tractor is believed to have led to the crash that claimed the lives of five family members, including a two-year-old child, along Jalan Engsengei here this morning (June 3).

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said preliminary investigations found that the car was travelling from Kampung Lubok Ria towards Serian when the driver attempted to overtake a tractor travelling in the same direction.

“During the overtaking manoeuvre, the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle.

“The car subsequently veered off the road, struck a water pipe and plunged into a large water-filled drain before overturning.

“All five occupants, including the driver, were confirmed dead at the scene by paramedics from Serian Hospital,” he said.

The victims comprised a two-year-old child, a teenager aged 16, and three adults aged 26, 30 and 47.

Mohamad Zainal said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In light of this, he reminded motorists to exercise caution when overtaking and to always ensure road conditions are safe before carrying out such manoeuvres.

Members of the public are also urged not to speculate or spread unverified information regarding the accident as investigations are still ongoing.
