PADAWAN: More than 9,000 visitors from across Malaysia and abroad took part in the Gawai Dayak celebration held at Kampung Annah Rais over two days, from June 1 to 2.
The community-led event, supported by Coca-Cola Malaysia, transformed the traditional Bidayuh longhouse village into a lively cultural hub, offering visitors a closer experience of local customs, hospitality and heritage.
The Gawai Dayak celebration is an annual harvest festival marked by the Dayak communities in Sarawak, traditionally observed with thanksgiving, family gatherings and cultural rituals to celebrate the end of the rice harvest season.
Deputy Minister of Transport (Air and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil was among the guests who attended the festivities, joining residents and visitors in the celebrations.
A key highlight of the programme was the traditional Ngabang open house, where villagers warmly welcomed guests to share food, stories and fellowship in the spirit of Gawai. The practice reflects the strong community values of unity and hospitality that define the festival.
Cultural performances, including traditional music and dances, were staged throughout the two-day event, bringing together performers and audiences from different generations and backgrounds. These performances helped preserve and promote Bidayuh cultural identity while engaging younger participants.
One of the main attractions was the Dayung Sangun Beauty Pageant, which showcased Bidayuh heritage and pride through the participation of four contestants. The title was won by Sonia Vivian Rua Gabriel from the Bidayuh-Biannah community.
The festivities also featured a community bazaar, where local handicrafts, traditional foods, fresh produce and handmade souvenirs were sold. The bazaar provided an important platform for local vendors and artisans to promote their products and support rural livelihoods.
Organisers said sponsorship from Coca-Cola Malaysia helped enhance the event’s activities while maintaining its community-driven spirit, which remains central to how Gawai is celebrated in Kampung Annah Rais.
The strong turnout reflects growing interest in cultural tourism in Sarawak, with villages like Kampung Annah Rais increasingly becoming popular destinations for visitors seeking authentic heritage experiences alongside traditional celebrations.
