KUCHING: Sarawak’s junior men’s golf team is shaping up as a genuine medal contender ahead of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026, with state officials confident of challenging for top honours in Selangor this August.
Sarawak Golf Association (SGA) vice president, Anthony Tan, said Sarawak currently has six male and six female golfers in its longlist, with the final squad to be reduced to four players in each category later this month.
“I believe we have a strong boys team this year.
“We have golfers like Joshua Lim and Sebastian Zane Fong who did very well in Singapore recently.
“I think we have a good chance of a gold medal for the boys,” he said during a press conference at Sarawak Golf Club on Thursday (June 4).
The final squad is expected to be confirmed by mid-June before entering a centralised training programme ahead of the national multi-sport Games.
Anthony said while the junior women’s squad remains relatively young, the association is continuing to invest in long-term development through increased exposure and competition opportunities.
“The better ones, we will train them and give them more exposure by competing overseas against stronger players,” he said.
Golf offers four gold medals at SUKMA – men’s individual, women’s individual, men’s team and women’s team events.
Anthony said Sarawak would be pleased with a return of one or two gold medals from the competition.
“If we can get two, it’s very good. It’s 50 per cent,” he added.
