KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a direct face-toface meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a rare open letter, urging renewed efforts to end the war through direct negotiations.

In the letter published on Thursday, Zelensky called for a personal meeting with Putin and suggested setting a specific date for talks.

He also said Ukraine would be prepared to implement a full ceasefire for the duration of negotiations.

Zelensky argued that only direct discussions between the two leaders could produce a meaningful agreement, particularly on contentious issues such as territory.

The proposal came shortly after Putin acknowledged that Russia needs to strengthen its air defence capabilities following a series of Ukrainian drone attacks, including strikes targeting facilities in Saint Petersburg during the ongoing international economic forum in the city.

US President Donald Trump welcomed the prospect of a Zelensky-Putin meeting, describing it as a positive step and urging both sides to make compromises.

Trump claimed US-led diplomatic efforts had helped create conditions for possible talks, although negotiations so far have failed to bring the two sides closer to a peace agreement.

The Kremlin said Putin had not yet seen the letter but indicated that Zelensky could travel to Moscow “at any time”.

However, Zelensky ruled out such a scenario in his appeal.

Putin has repeatedly questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy as Ukraine’s leader, citing the expiration of his presidential term in 2024, while Kyiv maintains that elections cannot be held under martial law during wartime.

Despite expressing willingness to pursue a peaceful settlement, Putin said Russian forces continue advancing along the front line.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has intensified long-range strikes against Russian military and energy infrastructure, describing them as retaliation for continued Russian attacks.

Zelensky warned that unless Russia decides to end the conflict, Ukraine will continue fighting to defend its sovereignty and existence. – AFP
