KUCHING: Sarawak’s boxing squad for the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor will undergo a month-long training stint in Thailand as part of preparations for the national multi-sport Games.
Sarawak Amateur Boxing Association (SABA) president Datuk Dr Rahman Lariwoo said the training programme, scheduled to begin in early July, is aimed at raising the squad’s performance level and ensuring the athletes are fully prepared for the competition.
“We will be bringing all the boxers to Thailand for a month of training.
“This approach is to ensure they are at the best possible level of readiness for the competition in Selangor,” Rahman told Sarawak Tribune recently.
He said the athletes would be exposed to a more intensive training programme and take part in several friendly bouts against young Thai boxers during their stay.
SABA is expected to field 11 boxers at SUKMA Selangor 2026, which will be held from Aug 15 to 24.
At present, 10 athletes have been identified, with one slot still up for grabs.
The men’s squad comprises Azriq Syakirin Azfarizan (51kg), Khairil Hazami Sulam (54kg), Muhammad Irfan Mohamad Ishak (57kg), Davis Beckham Mit (60kg), Lam Wee Liang (63.5kg), Marcos Robert (71kg) and Anderton Tie Teck Hieng (75kg).
The women’s squad consists of Patricia Jaquilina Bruce (48kg), Clavia Charlene Sudang (52kg) and Hamiesha Hamdan (57kg).
The final place in the team will be decided after the Sarawak International Boxing Championship 2026 in Miri from June 23 to 28.
Riq Roland and Abraham Samuel Jerry are currently undergoing final evaluation for the remaining place in the 67kg category.
At SUKMA Sarawak 2024, the state boxing team collected 11 medals comprising four gold, four silver and three bronze.
