KUCHING: The earthquake that struck Mambong on the 4th of this month registered 2.9 on the Richter Scale, a level that authorities have described as within normal range and not cause for alarm.
Mambong assemblyman, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, said this when speaking to the press after officiating the closing ceremony of the Sarawak Career and Training (SCaT) Fair 2026 at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here today (June 7).
He said he had consulted with the authorities, who confirmed the reading was not at an alarming state.
“Sometimes it happens. They are still investigating as to what caused the earthquake, so we do not know yet. However, we advise not to be alarmed as it is only 2.9. In some parts of the world, it also occurs in the same manner,” he said.
He added that this was the first time such an incident had occurred in the area, and that authorities were still awaiting a full report from geoscience officials on the cause.
On concerns over areas that had previously experienced road collapses and whether these posed additional risk in the event of aftershocks, Dr Jerip said the situation was being closely monitored.
“We hope that this is the first time and hopefully it will never happen again. As time goes by, we will make sure that we do the necessary repairs,” he said.
He noted that a report on the road collapse had been submitted to the Resident Office for repair works, which would be funded under the emergency and disaster fund.
On the current condition of roads in the area, he said most roads remained intact, with only minor damage reported.
“Most of the roads are still intact. There are some that are a little bit broken, but not much,” he said.
