KUCHING: Officials from the Sarawak Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and several other agencies have swooped down on construction sites in Kuching, Sibu and Miri to ensure compliance with the law.
Checks on all three places led to the issuance of notices, compounds and investigations being opened.
At a construction site in Petra Jaya here Tuesday (June 9) the integrated operation discovered breaches to requirements under the CIDB 1994 (Act 520).
“Following the inspection, CIDB issued 12 notices and five notices of offence or compounds against parties found to have failed to comply with the requirements under the CIDB Act 520 and related regulations,” it said in a statement.
In addition, one case involving the use of construction materials without a Standard Compliance Certification (PPS) remains under investigation.
“Among the main offences identified were breaches of contractors’ obligations through the use of A-Frame scaffolding for falsework activities, failure by appointed subcontractors to declare their projects, employment of construction personnel without valid registration, and failure to accredit skilled construction personnel as required under Act 520,” it added.
A similar operation was also carried out in Sibu and Miri, to ensure project declaration requirements as well as safety and quality standards at site.
In Sibu, CIDB issued 11 notices and three compounds, with three cases currently under investigation on a construction site.
And in Miri, the agency issued a construction site six notices and three compounds for non-compliance, while six cases were opened for further investigation.
CIDB stressed that the enforcement action is intended to ensure industry-wide compliance and to support the development of a sustainable, safe, high-quality, and integrity-driven construction sector in line with the nation’s aspirations.
