KUCHING: Six historically significant sites and structures across Sarawak will be gazetted under heritage protection measures following decisions reached during the first Sarawak Heritage Council Meeting of 2026.
The sites comprise the Old Nurses’ Quarters, Japanese Building and Old Sarawak Railway Track Site and Maintenance Depot in Kuching, Tanjung Lobang Lighthouse and Salome Dam in Miri, as well as Ranee Fort in Saratok.
Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the move reflects the state government’s continued commitment towards preserving heritage assets and safeguarding Sarawak’s historical legacy for future generations.
“These sites represent important chapters in Sarawak’s development and cultural journey. Their gazettement will ensure proper protection, conservation and recognition of their historical significance.”
He said this at a press conference during the Sarawak Heritage Council Meeting of 2026 held at Hilton Hotel on Thursday (June11).
The council also reviewed the encouraging performance of two recently established museums, namely the Brooke Dockyard Industrial Museum and the Santubong Archaeological Park and Wallace Centre.
“As of May 31 this year, the Brooke Dockyard Industrial Museum recorded 37,126 visitors, while the Santubong Archaeological Park and Wallace Centre attracted 16,758 visitors.
“Meanwhile, the Sarawak Museum Department reported receiving 88 donated heritage objects in 2025 and another 39 so far this year, enriching the state’s growing collection.”
Abdul Karim said a special temporary exhibition is being planned for 2027 to showcase many of the unique artefacts and historical items donated to the department.
