SIBU: Quick action by a neighbouring shop worker prevented a small fire from spreading through a commercial premises along Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai here yesterday (June 15).

The incident happened around 12.10 pm and involved a shop selling water dispensers, where smoke was seen billowing from inside the premises.

Firefighters from the Sungai Merah station were dispatched to the scene, about 6 km away, following an emergency call.

Upon arrival, they found that the fire occurred after an LED light fixture fell from the ceiling onto a chair, igniting a small blaze in the work area.

Before the flames could spread to other parts of the shop, an employee from a neighbouring premises managed to extinguish the fire using a dry powder fire extinguisher.

The team carried out ventilation works by opening the front and rear doors of the premises to clear smoke and ensure the area was safe.

Following a thorough inspection, firefighters confirmed that there was no further fire hazard or risk of reignition.

The operation ended at 12.40 pm.
