SIBU: More than 120 people attended a cancer awareness talk jointly organised by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Sibu and Sunway Medical Centre, reflecting growing public interest in preventive healthcare and early disease detection.
The programme, titled “Cancer Is No Longer a Fear: From Symptom Recognition to Precision Treatment”, was held at a prominent hotel here recently and attracted 122 participants from various backgrounds.
The event aimed to raise awareness of cancer prevention and early detection, while educating the public on the latest developments in precision medicine and cancer treatment.

The talk featured two specialists from Sunway Medical Centre: Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist Dr Khoo Wei Foong, and Consultant Orthopaedic Oncology Surgeon Dr Tee Tak Leong.
Both speakers shared insights on cancer risk factors, early warning signs, recommended screening methods and current treatment options available to patients.
Participants responded enthusiastically during the question-and-answer session, seeking professional advice on personal and family health concerns.
Organising chairlady Joanna Ling said the strong turnout reflected increasing public awareness of the importance of preventive healthcare and regular health screenings.
“I would like to express my profound gratitude to Sunway Medical Centre, our sponsors, supporting partners and the organising committee for their contributions towards the success of this event,” she said.

JCI Sibu president Elden Lau said the organisation remains committed to organising impactful community programmes that promote public well-being.
“Health is one of life’s most valuable assets, and health education empowers individuals to make informed decisions for themselves and their families,” he said.
In addition to the educational sessions, participants benefited from complimentary health screenings, free medical consultations, refreshments and lucky draw activities.
Early registrants also received complimentary blood test vouchers sponsored by Sibu Clinic.
The organisers expressed appreciation to supporting partners, including Sibu Clinic, Dr Kong Dental Clinic and Unicare Pharmacy, for their contributions to the programme.
The event concluded on a positive note, with participants gaining a better understanding of cancer prevention, early detection and the role of precision medicine in modern cancer treatment.
Organisers hope similar initiatives will continue to encourage healthier lifestyles and strengthen health awareness within the community.
