KUCHING: The Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak will continue monitoring and implementing measures to ensure Batang Lupar Bridge 1 remains clean while reviewing additional concerns for improvement.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the PWD Sarawak director is reviewing cleanliness concerns and other issues at Batang Lupar Bridge 1, with a report expected within two weeks.

“PWD Sarawak will take the necessary steps to maintain the bridge’s cleanliness while addressing other issues that may require improvement.

“We are also taking measures to provide waste disposal facilities and will continue monitoring the area to ensure the place remains clean and attractive,” he told reporters after the media conference held at  Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) building here today.

His response followed questions from media practitioners regarding social media posts showing rubbish scattered along sections of the bridge, which sparked public concern and calls for greater civic responsibility.

Uggah, who is also Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development said the issue should be addressed collectively to preserve the bridge’s image as both a public asset and an emerging attraction in Sarawak.

“Now, many people are travelling through and visiting the area. My advice is to please make sure that any waste is disposed of properly so that it does not become an issue that could affect Sarawak’s image.

“I therefore ask for everyone’s cooperation as this is our shared property, the property of the people of Sarawak,” he said.

He added that Batang Lupar Bridge 1 has drawn interest beyond Sarawak such as from Singapore and is emerging as a major tourist attraction.

“Please take good care of it so that it continues to be a source of pride in the future,” he said.

Uggah also reminded road users to prioritise safety by driving responsibly and avoiding excessive speed, stressing that the bridge was built to improve public mobility and should be used prudently with consideration for the safety of others.
