BAU: A 60-year-old wireman was killed after the sport utility vehicle (SUV) he was driving collided with a pickup truck along the Pan Borneo Highway near Kampung Sipadah on Tuesday (June 16).

The victim, identified as Jemos Sabas from Kampung Stenggang, succumbed to severe injuries while receiving treatment at Bau Hospital following the crash.

Bau Police Chief, Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman, said the accident, which occurred at KM20 of the Bau-Lundu Road, involved a Mitsubishi Pajero and a Mitsubishi Triton pickup.

“Initial investigations found that the Pajero had suddenly emerged from a P-turn junction near Kampung Sipadah.

“The 22-year-old driver of the Triton was travelling from Lundu towards Kuching when the Pajero entered his path.

“Due to the close distance, he was unable to avoid the vehicle and collided with the front left side of the Pajero,” he said.

The impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles, with the Pajero sustaining heavy damage to its front left section while the Triton suffered severe front-end damage.

Haide said preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was caused by negligence on the part of the Pajero driver while making the P-turn.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
