MIRI: A local man who allegedly broke into a ‘nasi lemak’ eatery and fled with its cash machine has been arrested, nearly two weeks after the early morning burglary in Permyjaya.
Following intelligence gathering and investigations, the Crime Prevention Branch (CPJ) of the Miri Central Police Station arrested the 27-year-old during operations in Pujut at around 4:50 am today (June 18).
Miri police said the break-in occurred at 3:43 am on June 5 in Pusat Bandar Commercial Centre, Permyjaya Phase 3, after CCTV footage captured the suspect forcing his way into the premises before stealing a cash machine from the front counter.
The burglary resulted in losses estimated at RM590.35, and a police report was lodged later that day.
During the arrest today, police managed to recover the stolen cash machine and seized clothing believed to have been worn by the suspect during the burglary.
The suspect is being held at Miri Central Police lock-up to assist investigations under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking.
In light of this, police have urged business owners to strengthen security by installing appropriate surveillance and alarm systems, ensuring their premises are securely locked after business hours, and refraining from leaving cash or valuables inside their shops.
Members of the public are also encouraged to report any suspicious individuals or activities to the police to enable swift action.
