SINGAPORE: Singapore welcomed the signing of an agreement between the United States (US) and Iran to cease all military operations in West Asia.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said Singapore lauds the move to establish a framework for further negotiations on outstanding issues under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed today.

It also commended the efforts of mediators that have made the signing possible, in particular Pakistan and Qatar.

“A resolution of the outstanding issues in accordance with international law will create the necessary conditions for lasting peace, security, and stability in the region,” it said today.

Singapore further welcomed the commitment under the MoU to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for international navigation, a critical conduit for maritime trade.

“We urge all parties to uphold their obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and customary international law with respect to safe and unimpeded transit passage in the Strait of Hormuz, and to protect the safety and wellbeing of seafarers and ships in the region,” it said.

International media reported today that US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed an initial agreement containing a 14-point document to end the ongoing conflicts. – BERNAMA
