KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that Petroleum Nasional BHd (PETRONAS) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS) must forge close cooperation to elevate the standing of both Sarawak and Malaysia while unlocking the vast potential of the nation’s energy resources.

He said discussions between the federal government and the Sarawak Government on matters involving PETRONAS and PETROS have been guided by a mutual understanding reached between him and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“We remain committed to the understanding that was agreed upon between the Premier and myself. Firstly, we respect each other’s rights, regulations and laws.

“Secondly, we insist that PETRONAS and PETROS work together to uplift the status of Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole. It can be done, it has to be done through this common resource, and the potential is huge,” he said during his speech at the state-level Gawai Dayak Dinner here on Sunday night.

He said that Malaysia is internationally recognised as one of the world’s most peaceful countries and enjoys clarity in its economic policies, factors that are crucial in attracting investment and ensuring long-term economic success.

“We need to ensure that we succeed in this endeavour,” he said.

Anwar said that both he and Abang Johari have consistently emphasised to PETRONAS and PETROS the importance of focusing on common interests and strengthening collaboration for a mutually beneficial outcome.

“The huge opportunity is available, and we want this to be resolved fairly, squarely and justly between the two partners as a team. We want a win-win situation. Both parties must focus on the common interest and build close cooperation,” he said.

He added that progress in discussions between the two entities has been encouraging.

“I am pleased to inform you that the progress appears very positive now. I have received the latest report and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof has also been assisting through the technical committee,” he said.

Anwar expressed hope that a final agreement between PETRONAS and PETROS could be reached in the near future.

“I hope that within the nearest possible time, we can finalise an agreement between PETRONAS and PETROS to elevate the strength and dignity of our economy,” he added.
