LIMBANG: A sweep on drug abuse in northern Sarawak saw 13 men, including two senior citizens, hauled in after screening tests found all of them positive for methamphetamine.

‘Ops Cegah’, conducted by the Sarawak National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) together with its Limbang district office on June 19, focused on high-risk communities in Limbang and Lawas as part of the agency’s ongoing campaign to curb drug abuse.

The detainees, aged between 28 and 68, comprised two men aged 28 and 31, nine others between 40 and 50 years old, and two elderly men aged 66 and 68.

AADK confirmed that no minors were involved, and that methamphetamine was the only drug detected during the operation.

No seizures involving narcotics or other physical evidence were made.

All 13 men have since been charged under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983, which provides for the detention, treatment and rehabilitation of individuals found to be abusing drugs.

The court have ordered them to undergo rehabilitation at a Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (PUSPEN) or participate in a community-based rehabilitation programme.

The agency said the operation was carried out in line with the strengthened provisions under the amended Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983, reflecting AADK’s commitment to intensifying enforcement while expanding treatment and rehabilitation efforts.

Similar operations will continue across Sarawak as part of its drive towards achieving the national “Drug-Free 2030” agenda and protecting communities from the threat of drug abuse.

Members of the public seeking advice or wishing to report drug-related activities can contact AADK’s toll-free hotline at 1-800-22-2235 or via WhatsApp at 019-626 2233.
