MIRI: The WAK Fest Pickleball Challenge (WFPC) Miri 2026 has showcased the power of sport to unite communities as players from across Sarawak gathered for a day of competition, camaraderie and shared passion.

Held on Saturday (June 20) as part of the WAK Festival calendar, the tournament continued its mission of connecting communities, developing players and creating opportunities for people of all skill levels to experience the excitement of competitive pickleball.

In a statement issued recently, organisers The Podium Project and WAK Festival expressed their appreciation to all participants, noting that every player — from seasoned competitors to first-time tournament participants — had played a role in the event’s success and the continued growth of pickleball in Sarawak.

The men’s doubles competition saw some exciting battles throughout the day, with Faustino Rinaldon Mundaw and Nicholas Su emerging as champions.

Wong Kiung King and Gabriel Chn’ng Ming Wei finished as first runners-up, while Lau Ton Pin and Eddie Sim Chow Ping secured second runners-up honours. Houng Yen Ming and James Wong completed the top four.

Beyond the results, WFPC organisers reiterated their commitment to building the sport from the grassroots level.

“Unlike many tournaments that primarily cater to advanced players, WFPC intentionally places strong emphasis on DUPR 3.5 and below divisions, providing intermediate and developing players with a fair and accessible platform to gain valuable tournament experience.

“The initiative aims to encourage everyday players to step onto the court, build confidence and progressively transition from recreational to competitive play.

“The organisers believe pickleball should remain accessible and inclusive rather than intimidating, allowing players of varying abilities to learn from one another and elevate their standards together,”the statement read.

The strong response received in both Sibu and Miri reflects the rapid growth of the sport in Sarawak, with players seeking not only competition but also opportunities to build friendships, foster a sense of belonging and grow together as a community.

Attention will now shift to the WFPC Grand Finale in Kuching, scheduled for Oct 3 and 4, which organisers are planning as the biggest event of the year.

More than a championship event, the grand finale is envisioned as a celebration of the pickleball community that has been built throughout Sarawak.

While top players will compete for titles, the weekend will also feature activities designed to encourage participation, create connections and welcome newcomers into the sport.

Organisers emphasised that players do not need to be elite competitors to be part of WFPC, encouraging anyone interested in trying a tournament, meeting fellow enthusiasts or becoming part of the growing sporting community to join the Kuching event.

“To all players, volunteers, officials, sponsors, venue partners, supporters, families, and spectators — thank you for making WFPC Miri 2026 a memorable success.

“We look forward to welcoming the entire pickleball community to Kuching this October for an even bigger celebration of sport, friendship, and community,”the statement added.
