MUKAH: Two ship crew members, including a foreigner, were charged in the Magistrates’ Court today after an anti-drug operation allegedly uncovered suspected syabu and found both men had consumed drugs.

The accused, aged 34 and 32, were arrested during a raid by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) at a parking area outside a hardware shop along Jalan Pasar Lama yesterday (Jun 23).

Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said checke on the local suspect led to the discovery of a plastic packet containing crystalline substances believed to be methamphetamine.

No illegal items were found on the foreign suspect. The suspected drugs seized weighed around 0.82g.

“Both men were taken to the Mukah IPD for further investigation, and urine tests conducted on them returned positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

“The local man is charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of drugs and Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act for drug consumption.

“While, the foreigner is only charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug consumption,” he said.

The charges were read before magistrate Oon Kork Chern, and no plea was recorded from either accused.

Prosecuting officer Insp Mohd Nazri Harissman Daee applied for a new mention date pending completion of the Chemistry Department report on the seized drugs.

Oon allowed the application and fixed Aug 3 for further mention of the case.

The local accused was granted bail of RM3,000 with two local sureties, while the foreign accused was denied bail and ordered to be remanded at Sibu Prison pending the next court proceedings.
