MIRI: Boxing enthusiasts have been urged to head to Miri Indoor Stadium as the 5th Sarawak International Open Boxing Championship 2026 enters full swing with over 60 boxers competing over six days.
Deputy President of the Sarawak Amateur Boxing Association (SABA), Datuk Johnny Ting Su King, said the championship, which began on Tuesday (June 23), features boxers representing various clubs from across Sarawak as well as participants from neighbouring countries.
“More than 60 top boxers from various clubs throughout Sarawak are competing, alongside several boxers from overseas,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

The participants are contesting in multiple weight categories throughout the six-day championship, which runs until June 28.
Johnny said this year’s edition also includes boxers from the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) squad, development centres and elite programmes, adding further quality and competitiveness to the event.
He encouraged the public, especially Miri residents, to turn up and support the athletes at Miri Indoor Stadium.
“We encourage members of the public, especially those in Miri, to come and watch the matches and support the boxers competing in the championship,” he said.
Johnny also called on participants to make the most of the opportunity to demonstrate their talent and potential.
“This is your chance to showcase your true abilities and talent. Make full use of this opportunity,” he said.
He added that the championship is not only an avenue for clubs and development centres to highlight their athletes but also serves as a valuable talent identification platform for SABA to nurture boxers capable of progressing to higher levels of competition.
