ROBAN: A roadside hut next to an eatery was allegedly being used as a base to sell illegal public lottery numbers until police raided the premises and arrested a local man on Wednesday.
Saratok Police Chief, DSP Mathew Manggie, said the suspect was detained at around 12:40 pm by the district Criminal Investigation Division (CID) during an ‘Ops Dadu’ raid.
“The 30-year-old suspect was alone inside the hut when officers carried out the raid.
“Also seized from him was a Vivo Y21 phone and cash in various denominations believed to be linked to the illegal gambling activity,” he said.
Initial investigations found that the suspect, who is unemployed, admitted to acting as an agent selling illegal public lottery numbers around Roban town to earn extra income.
Mathew said the suspect is believed to have been operating the illegal lottery business for the past two weeks, targeting customers in and around the town.
Preliminary urine screening conducted on the suspect returned negative for drugs.
The case is being investigated under Section 4A(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
