KUCHING: Youth participation in chambers of commerce will ensure leadership continuity and sustain Bumiputera economic development in Sabah and Sarawak, says Kadazan Dusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) president Datuk Ladislaus Maluda.
He said the Gawai-Kaamatan Celebration, first organised in 2007, was initially held on a modest setting, with activities largely centred on casual gatherings such as golf and informal celebrations.
“However, over the years, this celebration has grown significantly. Today, compared to the past, we are also organising business forums that place strong emphasis on young entrepreneurs and youth participation,” he said in his speech during the 17th Joint Gawai Kaamatan Celebration by the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and KCCI at the UNIFOR Complex here on Sunday (Jun 28) night.
The event was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Ladislaus said the increasing involvement of graduates and young entrepreneurs in both DCCI and KCCI signals a positive development for the future of the chambers.
“This is a very good sign for the future of both chambers as more young graduates and entrepreneurs are showing interest in joining DCCI and KCCI,” he said.
He noted that a similar trend is also evident in Sabah, where KCCI membership is increasingly dominated by younger members.
“I believe this is the true role of a chamber of commerce, to nurture and guide the next generation of entrepreneurs.
“Looking at myself, I may still have a few more years to serve. After that, it is time for us to make way for the younger generation to take over and continue leading both chambers,” he added.
He also expressed admiration for Abang Johari’s leadership, saying it is highly respected not only in Sarawak but also in Sabah.
