SIBU: Kent Boxing Club (KBC) Kanowit reinforced its growing reputation as one of Sarawak’s emerging boxing powerhouses after delivering an impressive performance at the 5th Sarawak Open International Boxing Championship 2026, held at the Miri Indoor Stadium recently.

Despite facing fierce competition from top local and international boxers, the Kanowit-based club rose to the occasion by securing three silver medals and one bronze, underscoring the strength of its grassroots development programme and the rising calibre of its athletes on the international stage.

The silver medals were won by Alfonso Matthew in the 46kg category, Gabriel Ashnister (50kg) and Augustine Dimas (66kg), while Teo Hudson claimed bronze in the 52kg category following a spirited and determined campaign throughout the tournament.

KBC’s head coach and team manager, Kennedy Edwin, described the achievement as the product of months of disciplined preparation, unwavering commitment and the athletes’ determination to excel against quality opposition.

“Every medal represents the sacrifices, perseverance and hard work of our athletes. Their commitment throughout training has paid off, and this achievement reflects the dedication shown by both the boxers and the coaching team,” he said.

He added that the result was a clear indication that KBC’s long-term athlete development programme is moving in the right direction, with the club continuing to nurture promising young talents capable of competing at higher levels.

According to Kennedy, the success in Miri will serve as added motivation to further strengthen the club’s training programme while expanding boxing development efforts in Kanowit to provide more young athletes with opportunities to compete at the state, national and international levels.

“We are proud of what our athletes have achieved, but this is only the beginning. Our goal is to continue producing boxers who can compete at the highest level while bringing honour to Kanowit, Sarawak and Malaysia,” he said.

Kennedy also expressed his appreciation to the athletes’ parents, supporters and everyone who continues to stand behind the club, stressing that their encouragement has been instrumental in KBC’s progress.

He also acknowledged the contributions of assistant coaches, Luke Casmir Brendan Ullok and Henry Kalau, whose guidance and dedication played a vital role in preparing the athletes for the prestigious championship.

The latest achievement further cements KBC Kanowit’s status as one of Sarawak’s rising boxing clubs, demonstrating that talent, discipline and consistent grassroots development can produce athletes capable of making their mark beyond the state level.
