KUCHING: Cape Verde’s remarkable FIFA World Cup fairytale came to a heartbreaking end after the tournament debutants pushed defending champions Argentina to the brink before falling 3-2 after extra time in a Round of 32 thriller.
At Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, the African newcomers matched the world champions blow for blow, twice coming from behind to force an additional 30 minutes before cruelly conceding the decisive goal nine minutes from penalties.
Cristian Romero’s towering header from Lionel Messi’s corner in the 111th minute ultimately proved the difference, with the ball taking a decisive deflection off defender Diney Borges before crossing the line.
The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Argentine players while leaving the Cape Verde squad devastated, knowing they had come agonisingly close to one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.
Yet the result barely told the story.
Few gave Cape Verde any chance against the reigning champions before kick-off.
Instead, the Blue Sharks once again defied expectations, refusing to be overawed by one of football’s greatest nations as they produced another fearless display on the biggest stage.
Argentina struck first through Lionel Messi, but Cape Verde refused to disappear.
Deroy Duarte brought the African side level before Gonzalo Montiel restored Argentina’s advantage.
Just when it appeared the South Americans would finally see out the victory, full-back Sidny Cabral produced the moment of his life.
Collecting possession on the left flank, Cabral drove inside before unleashing a sublime curling effort into the top corner to make it 2-2, sending the Cape Verde supporters into delirium and forcing extra time.
With penalties looming, Argentina finally found the breakthrough.
Messi’s inviting corner found Romero, whose glancing header struck Borges on its way into the net, ending Cape Verde’s resistance with just minutes remaining.
Despite one final push in the closing stages, the African debutants could not find another equaliser as Argentina held on to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Although their journey ends here, Cape Verde leave the 2026 FIFA World Cup with their heads held high.
Playing in their first-ever World Cup, the island nation stunned established football powers, reached the knockout stage and pushed the defending champions to the absolute limit.
For Argentina, the dream of retaining their world title remains alive.
For Cape Verde, history has already been written.
Their World Cup debut will be remembered not for the defeat, but for proving that belief, courage and resilience can carry even football’s smallest nations onto the biggest stage.
