GEDONG: Sarawak youth have been encouraged to participate in the Malaysian Youth Parliament to strengthen their involvement in the country’s parliamentary democracy and nurture a new generation of capable future leaders.
President of the Senate, Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, said the Malaysian Youth Parliament serves as an important platform for young people to better understand the country’s system of governance while providing them with an avenue to voice their views and contribute to policy-making and national development.
He said early exposure to the parliamentary system would help develop youth who are more knowledgeable, responsible and prepared to take on leadership roles in the future.
“Youth are the nation’s and Sarawak’s greatest asset and future. Their active participation in leadership platforms such as the Malaysian Youth Parliament must continue to be strengthened,” he told reporters after officiating at the Malaysian Youth Parliament Community Day Programme organised by the Office of the President of the Senate and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at Dewan Datuk Patinggi Ali here on Saturday (July 4).
Awang Bemee said that to date, about 20,000 youth from Sarawak have registered as members of the Malaysian Youth Parliament, reflecting the strong commitment among the state’s young people to actively participate in the democratic process and contribute to nation-building.
