BAU: A secluded telecommunications tower was targeted by cable thieves, who escaped with critical Maxis infrastructure worth an estimated RM10,500.
The theft was uncovered after Maxis’ monitoring system detected disruptions at several Sacofa telecommunications towers in Kampung Duyoh, prompting the company’s technician to arrange for an inspection.
Bau police chief Supt Mohd Haide A Rahman said the contractor who inspected the site found that the perimeter fence had been cut to gain entry before several cables were severed and stolen.
“The stolen items comprised about 70 metres of RRU power cable across six runs and 100 metres of CPRI cable across six runs.
“The suspects also cut a 7/8-inch feeder cable but left it behind at the scene,” he said.
Further investigations found the tower is located about 500 metres from the main road and sits another 30 metres uphill in a forested area, making it an isolated location.
Mohd Haide said the area is quiet, with no residents staying within a two-kilometre radius.
In addition, there are no streetlights along the main road or lighting and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at the tower
The case is being investigated under Section 431A of the Penal Code and Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

No arrests have been made and investigations are underway to trace the suspects.
