SIBU: A pillion rider was killed while the rider was injured after their motorcycle skidded out of control and crashed along Jalan Sibu Jaya Barat in the early hours of today (July 5).

Preliminary investigations found that the crash happened at around 2.15 am as the motorcycle was travelling towards Sibu Jaya town.

Sibu police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the rider is believed to have lost control of the motorcycle before it veered to the right side of the road.

“The rider sustained injuries to both arms and his left leg, and was rushed to Sibu Hospital for further treatment.

“However, his pillion rider succumbed to injuries at the scene and was pronounced dead by paramedics. The body has since been sent to Sibu Hospital’s Forensic Unit for a post-mortem,” he said.

Abang Zainal stated that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In light of this, he urged parents not to allow their children to ride motorcycles without a valid driving licence, reminding them that doing so is an offence under Section 39(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Those convicted may face a fine of up to RM2,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both.
