KUCHING: The Sarawak government is considering expanding its free tertiary education initiative to include psychology and other non-technical fields, reflecting the state’s evolving workforce and societal needs.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the initiative is planned to be expanded beyond Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes alone.
“Psychology is very important today because of changing lifestyles.
“Challenges such as stress and depression arise from the various pressures faced by society, making it important to understand mental wellbeing and promote activities that help people manage stress, including recreational pursuits,”
He told reporters this after the handover ceremony of an allocation for the construction of the Sri Satok Senior Citizens Activity Centre (PAWE) at Pusat Kebajikan Datuk Amar Hajah Juma’ani, Jalan Kulas, here on Sunday.
Abang Johari said the state is also looking at expanding the free education initiative to other fields that are equally important to Sarawak’s development.
He noted that Sarawak’s own television station, TVS, has created greater opportunities for graduates in performing arts, media and the social sciences.
“We are one of the few states to have our own television station, TVS, which has become an important catalyst for Sarawak’s economic growth by supporting the development of the state’s creative and media industries,” he said.
