KUCHING: Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be his last, saying he wants to savour every moment as Portugal prepare for a blockbuster last-16 clash against Spain.
The 41-year-old, appearing in a record sixth World Cup, revealed Sunday’s knockout tie could be his final match on football’s biggest stage if Portugal fail to progress.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 clash against Spain, the 41-year-old said the decision had already been made.
“I am enjoying this World Cup, the fans and the people. And it’s gonna be my last World Cup for sure, the decision is made.”
Ronaldo, who became the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups earlier this tournament, hopes his farewell won’t come just yet.
“This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow isn’t my last game.”
The Portugal captain became the first player to score in six different World Cups after netting against Uzbekistan in the group stage and has since taken his tournament tally to three goals, including his first-ever World Cup knockout goal against Croatia.
Despite never winning the World Cup, Ronaldo insisted the trophy would not define his career.
“I’m not going to be more or less Cristiano because I win the World Cup,” he said. “I’ve given everything to football.”
Portugal face Spain on Tuesday (Malaysian Time) with a place in the quarter-finals at stake, while the 2030 World Cup will be co-hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
