KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Sarawak Cancer Centre (SCC) has entered the tender stage, with shortlisted contractors preparing proposals for the design and construction of the landmark healthcare facility ahead of the October submission deadline.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said contractors shortlisted through the pre-qualification exercise had attended a briefing as part of the procurement process before officials from the Ministry of Works and Ministry of Health inspected the proposed project site here today (July 7).

“The contractors who have been selected through the pre qualification process will submit their proposals by October.

“We hope to appoint the successful contractor by early January 2027,” he told reporters.

The successful bidder will undertake the project under a 60 month design and build contract, followed by a two year Defect Liability Period (DLP), with the centre targeted for completion in 2032.

Nanta said the Ministry of Health had outlined the project’s functional requirements through a Statement of Need, while allowing bidders the flexibility to propose their own designs provided they met all prescribed specifications.

“How the design looks is up to each bidder, as long as it fulfils the requirements that have been set,” he said.

He added that the project was expected to cost more than RM1 billion, although the final contract value would only be determined after the tender evaluation process.

“The Sarawak government has advanced RM1 billion for the project, which will later be reimbursed by the federal government,” he explained.

To be built on a 27 acre site adjacent to the Sarawak Heart Centre (SHC) in Kota Samarahan, the SCC will house 310 beds and provide comprehensive cancer care, including outpatient and inpatient services, diagnostics, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy.

Once completed, the centre will be equipped with state of the art technology to strengthen cancer treatment capacity and improve access to specialised oncology services for patients across Sarawak.
