SIBU: The University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) has appointed Prof. Ir Ts Dr Mohammad Shahril Osman as its new Vice-Chancellor, effective from July 1, 2026.
The appointment was approved by the university’s Board of Directors and the Department of Higher Education, marking a significant step in UTS’ commitment to strengthening academic excellence, research innovation, and community engagement in Sarawak and beyond.
Shahril brings with him extensive experience in engineering, technology and higher education leadership.
A Professor, Professional Engineer (Ir), Professional Technologist (Ts) and doctorate holder, he has built a distinguished career in academia and professional practice.
As one of UTS’ pioneering staff members, he has played a key role in the university’s development.
His contributions have included academic research, curriculum development and the management of major projects, equipping him with the experience to lead the institution into its next phase of growth.
Under his leadership, UTS aims to strengthen its research capabilities, expand collaborations with industry and create greater opportunities for both students and academic staff.
The university said his appointment reflects its continued commitment to innovation, sustainability and academic excellence.
Expressing his appreciation for the appointment, Shahril said he was honoured to serve as the university’s Vice-Chancellor.
“I have been serving UTS for 12 years. UTS has the potential to grow globally. I look forward to working closely with our schools, staff and students to further enhance excellence in education and research, while contributing meaningfully to the development of Sarawak and Malaysia,” he said.
Prior to his appointment, Shahril served as UTS’ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
He previously held the positions of Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology and Head of the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Hons) programme.
