KUCHING: Repair and upgrading works on the damaged coastal protection bund at Tanjong Embang are now underway, with efforts being accelerated to complete the main construction works before the upcoming monsoon season.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the progress of the Tanjong Embang Coastal Protection Structure construction and upgrading project was reviewed during a recent site visit by her Parliamentary Office together with the Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).

She said the project was initiated following complaints from Penghulu Bolhassan regarding damage to the erosion protection embankment affecting residents in Kampung Beradek, Kampung Semilang and Kampung Tiang Api.

“Following the complaints, we brought the matter to DID Sarawak for further action, and eventually the project received approval from the Federal Government,” she said in her Facebook post on Friday.

Nancy, who is also the Santubong MP, thanked both the federal and state DID for their cooperation, commitment and support in making the project a reality.

“I was also informed by the contractor that they are working hard to complete the major works before the arrival of the monsoon season. We pray that everything will proceed smoothly,” she said.

Upon completion, Nancy said the upgraded bund would help reduce coastal erosion while also mitigating the risk of river and seawater overflow that frequently affects nearby communities, particularly during the monsoon period.

She added that she would continue monitoring the project’s implementation to ensure it was completed according to schedule and delivered maximum benefits to residents of Tanjong Embang and surrounding areas.

“What we are doing is to ensure the needs of the people in this area continue to receive attention,” she said.
