KUCHING: A workers’ quarters housing about 30 occupants was reduced to ashes in a morning fire along Lorong Peace 3, opposite Chung Hua Middle School today.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the 7.30am incident as all occupants managed to escape to safety.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Padungan station, assisted by personnel from Tabuan Jaya and Batu Lintang stations, were dispatched to the scene following a distress call.

Upon arrival, they found a non-permanent workers’ accommodation consisting of 10 rooms fully engulfed in flames.

Two motorcycles parked at the premises were also burnt beyond repair.

Firefighters drew water from fire engines and a nearby hydrant to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

The fire was brought under control at 7.56am and overhaul works followed suit to ensure there was no risk of reignition.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the operation ended at 9.29am.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
