PUTRAJAYA: Upgrading works for all sports facilities that will serve as venues for the 2027 SEA Games in Kuching are targeted for completion before June next year.
Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said upgrading works are progressing well to ensure all facilities are completed according to schedule.
“At the moment, upgrading works are being carried out intensively as Sarawak will host 17 sports during the 2027 SEA Games.
“In addition, the opening ceremony will be held at the Sarawak Stadium in Kuching in September 2027.
“All projects are targeted to be completed before June 2027. Some are about halfway through, but we can already see significant changes, especially at the Sarawak Stadium,” he said in an UKAS report after attending the launch of the official logo, mascot and theme for the 34th SEA Games and the 14th ASEAN Para Games 2027 at IOI City Mall here on Monday (Jul 13).
The event was officiated by Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohamed Taufiq Johari.
Abdul Karim added that the Sarawak government will organise the Sarawak leg of the 2027 SEA Games Torch Run as part of efforts to build excitement for the biennial sporting event among the people of the state and the country.
However, he said further details of the torch run would be announced in due course.
On the official mascot, Abdul Karim said the futuristic-themed mascot, named ‘TUAH’, symbolises not only progress and a forward-looking vision, but also the unity of Malaysia’s multiracial society.
“It represents moving forward and looking ahead without highlighting racial differences. This is what we hope sporting events like this can achieve — to further unite Malaysians.
“At the same time, we hope everyone will come together to support Malaysia in all the sporting events,” he said.
Sarawak will host 17 of the 38 sports at the 2027 SEA Games, which are scheduled to be held from Sept 18 to 29.
The sports are aquatics, weightlifting, e-sports, gymnastics, golf, cricket, shooting, muaythai, pétanque, squash, taekwondo, tennis, wushu, basketball, tenpin bowling, lawn bowls and archery.
