KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will host the 35th ASEAN Veteran Basketball Tournament 2026 here next month.
All matches will be held at the MBKS Sports Village from August 11-15.
Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the tournament provides an excellent opportunity to introduce the city to visiting athletes, officials and supporters.
“I would like to congratulate the Hornbill Basketball Club for taking the initiative to organise this international event.
“Their commitment to promoting basketball and bringing regional sporting communities together is truly commendable,” he said during a press conference, here, Tuesday (July 14).
Wee said that this year’s tournament will involve 30 veteran teams from ASEAN countries, excluding Vietnam and Cambodia, with Kuching represented by six teams.
He added that the tournament is held annually on a rotational basis by ASEAN basketball associations and clubs to promote friendship, sportsmanship and regional unity.
“Hosting this tournament in Kuching is an honour. It provides an excellent opportunity to introduce our city to visiting athletes, officials and supporters.
“We hope they will experience not only our sporting facilities but also our renowned hospitality, vibrant culture and world-famous gastronomy while they are here,” he said.
