KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) on Tuesday launched the Kuching Festival Programme 2026, unveiling a diverse line-up of cultural, sporting, gastronomic and community activities to celebrate the festival’s 40th anniversary.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the festival will carry the theme, “Building a Compassionate and Resilient City for a Sustainable Future,” reflecting MBKS’ vision of fostering a caring, inclusive and forward-looking city where everyone can contribute and thrive.

“It reminds us that a truly sustainable city is one where every individual has the opportunity to participate, contribute and thrive,” he said during a press conference here.

Wee said the festival embraces the “No One Left Behind” principle by offering programmes for children, youths, adults and senior citizens, while strengthening community ties, preserving cultural heritage and encouraging healthy, active lifestyles.

He said this year’s celebration is especially meaningful as the Kuching Festival commemorates its 40th anniversary, having evolved from a modest community celebration in 1986 into one of Malaysia’s most iconic and eagerly anticipated city festivals.

“The festival officially begins on July 18 with the Smart Kids, Smart City Challenge – Robotic Walk, followed by the annual 722 Walk commemorating Sarawak Day and the official opening of the Kuching Festival Fair on July 22,” he said.

Programmes throughout the festival include cosplay and K-Pop dance competitions, Pokémon Trading Card Tournament, Kuching’s Got Talent, Folk Dance Display, Yuranji Dance, Pickle Rush, Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run, Sarawak Energy Marathon, Mayor’s Walk and Fishing Competition.

He added that among the festival’s major highlights is another Malaysia Book of Records attempt during the Kuching Zumba Fiesta 2026, aiming to achieve the largest senior citizen participation in a Zumba event after last year’s record-breaking success.

Kuching’s reputation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy will also be showcased through the UCCN Gastronomy Pavilion, Borneo Culinary World Cup, Crafted Tables for Two Exhibition and International Friendship Cities Night, celebrating global partnerships alongside the city’s rich multicultural heritage.
