MOSCOW: The Irish government has announced a ban on electric scooters for minors under 18 and a possible complete ban on their sale, Sputnik/RIA Novosti reported.
“It was agreed that high-visibility jackets and helmets will be mandatory for all e-scooter use, and the ban will be extended to under-18s. This will take effect in August,” the government said in a statement on Monday.
Authorities are also considering a complete ban on the sale of electric scooters and are preparing a law classifying them as vehicles, requiring a driver’s license and registration, the statement noted.
Since the beginning of 2026, more than a third of all pediatric traumatic brain injury hospitalisations at Dublin’s main children’s hospital have been related to electric scooters, the statement read, adding that “admissions for traumatic brain injuries from e-scooter accidents increased by 50 per cent in the last 12 months.” – BERNAMA-SPUTNIK/RIA NOVOSTI
