KUCHING: The Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for the largest senior citizens participation in a Zumba event will be up for grabs during the Kuching Zumba Fiesta (KZF) 2026 on Aug 8 (Saturday).
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said a minimum of 1,500 senior citizens is required to break the existing record, adding that the more participants who take part, the better.
He said the record attempt is part of the council’s preparations for Kuching becoming an ageing city by 2028 by encouraging senior citizens to remain active, healthy and socially connected.
“We want to show the world that Sarawakians, especially our senior citizens, are healthy, active and energetic, and prove to all of Malaysia that Kuching’s senior citizens are ready to set another national Zumba record.
“This has never been attempted before in Malaysia. I truly believe if any city can achieve this record, Kuching can.
“To all our senior citizens aged 60 years and above, this is your opportunity to make history,” he told reporters during the event media conference on Tuesday (July 21).
Wee added that KZF, which began more than a decade ago to encourage healthy living through community exercise, has since grown into one of the signature events of the annual Kuching Festival, attracting thousands of participants each year.
He noted that last year’s edition made history by earning two MBOR’s titles for the largest participation in a Zumba event and the largest participation in a glow-in-the-dark Zumba event.
To encourage greater participation this year, registered participants will stand a chance to win an iPhone 17 as the grand prize, along with electrical appliances and other attractive lucky draw prizes.
A special prize will also be presented to the oldest senior citizen taking part in the event.
“I invite everyone to register through the iPeople App to qualify for the lucky draw and join us at the KZF 2026.
“Of course, this event is not only for senior citizens. The Kuching Zumba Fiesta is for everyone so bring your parents, your grandparents, your children, your friends and your neighbours.”
Scheduled to begin at 7pm at the State Hockey Stadium, this year’s fiesta carries the theme “A Blast From The Past”.
Participants are encouraged to dress as their favourite era, from the 1920s to the 2000s, for a chance to win the Best Dressed cash prize while dancing to a mix of classic and contemporary hits.
