SIBU: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has hinted at a special announcement for Sarawakians during his Sarawak Day 2026 address tonight (July 22).
“There may be a special gift for the people of Sarawak, which I will announce tonight, so be sure to listen to my speech,” he said during a town hall session here today.
Abang Johari made the remark after outlining Sarawak’s economic transformation in response to a question on how the state doubled its annual revenue from RM7 billion in 2020 to RM14 billion in 2025 despite political uncertainty following the 2018 General Election and the economic challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.
He attributed the state’s financial growth to a series of strategic decisions, including Sarawak’s early push towards the digital economy, the introduction of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 and the implementation of the State Sales Tax (SST) on petroleum products, which he said was based on the state’s constitutional rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“The additional revenue has enabled the state government to invest more in infrastructure, education and other development initiatives that directly benefit the people of Sarawak,” he said.
